The secret Flinders Street Station gallery opens again with Shadow Spirit

Shadow Spirit

In June, the exclusive ballroom will host the exhibition as part of Melbourne's Rising Festival.

Flinders Street Station is one of the most iconic landmarks in Melbourne. Many of us pass through it every day, but even still, much of the massive historic building remains a mystery.

The Flinders Street Station Ballroom, converted from a lecture hall in 1934, has become a fascination for many in the city. The stunning space, originally created as a place for dances, gatherings and merriment, has spent most of its recent existence locked away from the public eye.

Rising Festival’s Shadow Spirit

  • As part of Rising Festival, Shadow Spirit will take over the Flinders Street Station hidden ballroom
  • The exhibition, curated by Yorta Yorta artist Kimberly Moulton, will run from June 7 to July 30
  • Tickets are on sale now

Only recently has it been brought back to the forefront of Melbourne arts and culture. In 2021, despite COVID-19 complications, Patrica Piccinini showed a mesmerizing exhibition in the space as part of that year’s Rising Festival. Most recently, Rone has taken over with a nostalgic show that has captivated the city – the sold-out experience ran from October 28 and will be closing soon on April 23.

Next on the agenda for the legendary location is Rising 2023’s Shadow Spirit. For the first time since the venue’s reopening, Australian First People will have control. Led by Yorta Yorta curator Kimberly Moulton, the talented team has created an intimate display that draws from Ancestral systems of knowledge and the metaphysical creatures that appear to provide both warnings and protection.

The abandoned Flinders Station space, with all of its mythical and elusive charms, is a fitting locale for what is expected to be both a haunting and illuminating exhibition.
