Melbourne Museum is bringing Ancient Rome to life with 150 rare artefacts.
Melbourne Museum is set to transport visitors back two millennia with Rome: Empire, Power, People, a major new exhibition opening exclusively in Melbourne on 1 April. The show promises an immersive journey through one of history’s most influential civilisations, featuring over 150 artefacts dating from the first to third century CE.
Rome: Empire, Power, People traces the arc of the ancient world from the dramatic fall of Julius Caesar through to the height of Imperial ambition. Visitors will encounter the political machinations, spiritual beliefs and daily rituals that shaped Roman life, from bustling marketplaces to lavish imperial chambers.

The exhibition draws on the collections of two of Italy’s most prestigious institutions, Museo Nazionale Romano and Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze. Developed in partnership with Contemporanea Progetti and curators from both museums, the show brings together pieces that have never before been displayed in Melbourne.
Among the 150-plus objects on show are statues, mosaics, frescoes, jewellery and everyday items that paint a picture of Roman society across all its strata. Expect everything from simple household utensils to ornate adornments worn by the elite. Highlights include a male torso sculpture in athletic stance from the first to second century CE and a striking Mask of Jupiter from the Roman Imperial Age.
The exhibition is presented with support from Italy’s Ministero della Cultura and the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Toscana.
