They did however indicate that “alternate events” are being planned in lieu of the fully-fledged Community Cup celebration.

The Community Cup first took place in 1997, when Triple R Program Manager James Young suggested Triple R and PBS 106.7FM join forces as team Megahertz to take on the Rockdogs in a friendly footy game to raise money for the Sacred Heart Mission.

Now, the Melbourne leg of the Reclink Community Cup raises upwards of $200,000 for Reclink Australia each year and brings crowds of over 14,000 to its home at Victoria Park.

The most recent Melbourne instalment was in 2019 – the event’s 25th anniversary edition – and saw the likes of Dan Sultan, Paul Kelly, Magic Dirt, Baker Boy and Harvey Sutherland perform.

Offering critical social-inclusion opportunities for disadvantaged Australians through sport, art and recreation programs, Reclink is one of the nation’s most established non-profit organisations. The Reclink Community Cup provides an important contribution to the foundation’s annual fundraising efforts, especially during the current pandemic, where the risk of social isolation and disconnection is even greater for Australian communities.
