Name/Band:
“The Pugs, Josh (guitar/squeezebox/vox/mandolin) is answering.”
Define your genre in five words or less:
“Loud, fast, drunken folk punk.”
So, someone is walking past as you guys are playing, they then go get a beer and tell their friend about you… what do they say?
“What the hell was that instrument?”
How long have you been gigging and writing?
“About two years. This is kind of the second incarnation of the band; the first was too busy drinking and didn’t ever really get around to playing anywhere so we’ll ignore that.”
What has been your favourite gig you’ve played to date?
“That’s a hard one. We recently played with The Good Ship at The Joynt in Brisbane; that was rad. It’s nice to play with a band that are just as drunk and dirty as us.”
Which band would you most like to play a show with?
“Any band that’ll have us! I personally would give my right arm to play with any of Jack White’s various bands, but that’s just my own personal fetish.”
Who would win in a battle between Donkey Kong and Master Chief from Halo ?
“Well, Master Chief would waltz in all cock of the walk with superior graphics and a huge array of weapons, then Donkey Kong would beat the crap out of him with a barrel and turn his skull into a bongo. So, basically, I think society is the real winner in this situation.”
What inspires or has influenced your music the most?
“Lots of the classic folk bands. Especially Australian stuff like Weddings Parties Anything, Roaring Jack, Bushwhackers etc.”
What do you think a band has to do these days to succeed?
“The same as they always have: gig like crazy and put on a good show every night. We live in a time where lots of bands get spoilt, and don’t want to do the hard yards, like they expect some fat record exec to find them on Facebook and love them. But I still believe in a good live band, they will always last beyond flash-in-the-pan acts.”
Do you have any record releases to date? What? Where can I get it?
“We’ve got a couple of EPs out. The first is Barnburner, we put that out a couple of years ago, there’s a few copies of that hanging around at live shows. Just recently we’ve released Loathsome Logan And Other Merry Tales. You can get that one from us, on iTunes or from Café On Albert.”
Why should everyone come and see your band?
“Because we need your hard earned cash to get home! Also we’re playing with a heap of great local bands so it’s bound to be fun all round. Especially Sunday night, we’re playing the Kopy Kat Tribute Show and paying tribute to The Real McKenzies and The Raconteurs so looking forward to playing some of their tunes.”
Famous last words?
“Can’t think of anything to write here, I’m still too riled up about the whole Master Chief/Donkey Kong debacle. I mean, who the hell does Master Chief think he is to challenge DK like that? Kids these days have no respect for their elders. I bet that helmet-wearing tosser wouldn’t even stand up for Peach on public transport!”
