Jack Skellington's misguided Christmas adventure gets the live orchestral treatment at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas in Concert hits The Plenary on 2 November, with the beloved animated classic screening in full while Grammy-winning composer Danny Elfman’s iconic score is performed live by The Australian Stage and Screen Orchestra. Guy Noble takes the conductor’s podium for this symphonic cinema experience.

Henry Selick directed this stop-motion masterpiece based on Tim Burton’s original poem and characters. It follows Jack Skellington, Halloween Town’s Pumpkin King, who’s grown tired of the same old scare-and-scream routine year after year and stumbles upon something entirely different: Christmas Town.

The Nightmare Before Christmas in Concert

  • Where: The Plenary, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, 1 Convention Centre Place, South Wharf
  • When: Sunday 2 November, 6pm
  • Tickets: here

Elfman’s musical score is central to the film’s enduring appeal, blending gothic theatricality with infectious melodies. Hearing it performed live by a full orchestra while watching the film unfold on the big screen adds a whole new dimension to the experience. Guy Noble, known for his work conducting live-to-film performances, will lead The Australian Stage and Screen Orchestra through Elfman’s intricate compositions.

This symphonic cinema presentation offers fans a chance to experience the film in a completely different way, with every musical note and dramatic flourish amplified by live instrumentation. Perfect for both longtime devotees and newcomers discovering Halloween Town for the first time.

Note that the film carries a PG rating, making it suitable for family audiences ready for some spooky-but-not-too-scary entertainment.
