Art of the Score: James Horner is heading to Arts Centre Melbourne with the full Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

The concert marks the latest collaboration between the MSO and the Art of the Score podcast, turning its attention to the legacy of legendary Hollywood composer James Horner. Across a career spanning more than 100 film scores, Horner crafted music of enormous emotional depth — from the romantic sweep of Titanic to the vast scale of Braveheart and the alien textures of Avatar. His compositions have soundtracked some of cinema’s most defining moments, and the MSO will bring a handpicked selection of them to life on stage.

The program spans the breadth of Horner’s catalogue, with selections and suites from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Aliens, Apollo 13, The Rocketeer and A Beautiful Mind. Conductor Nicholas Buc will lead the orchestra, joined by Art of the Score co-hosts Andrew Pogson and Dan Golding, Helpmann Award winner Amy Lehpamer and the Australian Girls Choir.

This isn’t your average symphonic performance. The show weaves introductions and on-stage moments into the concert, with Buc, Pogson and Golding unpacking what makes Horner’s compositional voice so distinctive. Expect soaring melodies, Celtic colouring, thunderous action writing and deeply emotional themes, all performed live by the full force of the MSO.

Art of the Score is a Melbourne-based podcast dedicated to exploring great soundtracks from film, television and video games. The hosting team break down central themes, review beloved scores and dig into the craft behind screen music, making it one of the go-to pods for soundtrack obsessives.

The podcast’s previous collaborations with the MSO have tackled the works of Joe Hisaishi, Hans Zimmer and John Williams. The James Horner edition is the latest instalment in what’s become a seriously popular run of cinematic concert events at Hamer Hall.
