On Cry For Judas, taken from The Mountain Goats’ upcoming LP Transcendental Youth, John Darnielle once again nails that melancholic balance between triumph and despair. He sounds almost angry when delivering lines such as “Mistreat your altar boys long enough and this is what you get”, like his vocals are intent on outpacing the rollicking beat. Also, the bassline is incredibly cheery.
