The mid-period Models lineup of Sean Kelly, Andrew Duffield, Barton Price and Mark Ferrie have been working on new material in Duffield’s studio in South Melbourne.
They play two shows at the Ding Dong Lounge on Friday September 20 and Saturday September 21, and will slip in which of the new songs they feel are match-ready.
Sean Kelly told Industrial Strength that the new material “sounds more like a sequel to Cut Lunch or The Pleasure of Your Company (the album which included the hit ‘I Hear Motion’ and crossed them over into the Top 10). To an extent, we’re doing what we always do – distilling our contemporary influences, trying to come up with new ideas.”
Duffield added, “With a couple of notable exceptions, the songs are developing out of jam sessions – we’re all putting in. We’ve all been working individually over the years – Sean is even more Sean, Mark is more Mark than ever, everyone has their own shtick. The process has been about getting back to playing together and seeing what the collective sound is about, these days. Is it relevant, is it something we want to listen to?”
They’re still working on the album, and there’s no definite release date for it.
Due around Christmas is a box set of the albums that this lineup made, with bonus tracks. These would include the demo of Barbados, and the English version of Two Cabs To The Toucan.
Duffield revealed: “We did a record of unreleased stuff, back at the turn of the century, containing some live to radio recordings, demos, and other stuff that had never been heard. But we’re drawing on some of Nick Launay’s 12″ remixes and maybe some b-sides, like The Ton which was the b-side of Mark Ferrie’s release of Unhappy that people haven’t got in their collection, that kind of thing.”
