Next year, the MCO will be joined by world-renowned guest artists, including recorder virtuoso Genevieve Lacey, ARIA-winning songsmith Lior and Finnish pianist Paavali Jumppanen.
The debut season of the incoming Artistic Director Sophie Rowell, the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra’s 2023 season has been announced with a focus on local talent. Engaging some of Victoria’s most esteemed musicians across more than a dozen performances next year, the MCO’s upcoming season highlights more music by female composers than in the orchestra’s previous 31 orchestral seasons combined.
The championing of Victorian talent extends offstage with new music and arrangements by Caerwen Martin, Erkki Veltheim, Ade Vincent & Lior; compositions by living composers including Melody Eötvös, Stuart Greenbaum, and Pēteris Vasks.

“I had one goal for this season: to showcase the global talent we have right here at home. Victoria is where you’ll find some of the most brilliant musicians and composers in the world and I’m thrilled that audiences will have the opportunity to experience that brilliance in all its glory throughout MCO’s 2023 season,” says Sophie Rowell on her debut season.
“Is there a better time than now to shine the spotlight on the incredible talent in Victoria and Melbourne? I don’t think so. After all, we are Melbourne’s Chamber Orchestra.”
