Tell us about your show. The LGBTIQ Sports Festival is the single largest annual event of its kind in Australia and brings together LGBTIQ sporting and recreation clubs for the ultimate come and try day. Supported and funded by Maribyrnong City Council, the Sports Festival will provide countless free sessions for individuals and groups interested in sport and recreation within the community.
Describe your ideal audience. Everyone is welcome to attend the festival, from people that have never played sport before to those that are keener on being competitive. We also have a family zone for LGBTIQ families.
Why is Midsumma an important event on Victoria’s cultural calendar? Midsumma is a celebration of where our community has been, where it is and where it’s heading. Together we are united in driving positive change. The LGBTIQ Sporting community is instrumental in that drive.
How does your show engage with queer culture? While it’s a once a year event, the great thing is that once a participant has found the sport they most enjoy, it doesn’t stop when the day concludes. We connect them with the relevant club and participants are able to continue to enjoy the sport week to week.
Why should someone see your show? Our event is the perfect way to engage with the LGBTIQ community in a positive and healthy way. Great friendships are forged from the connections that are made within our sporting clubs, as each club focuses on inclusion and being a safe space for LGBTIQ people to enjoy sport.
