The hills are alive! What’s on this September at the Bergy Bandroom

Bergy Bandroom
Great Australia Bank
WORDS BY KALANI GIDDEY

Though it might be the first venue along Sydney Road, you won't be making your way any further up the street once you're at the Bergy.

You know the drill.

The Bergy seems to only get better with age, as each month’s lineup has been consistently solid-gold in recent memory, and with plenty of good food and cheap beers on tap, there’s never a dull moment to be had at the Bergy, well and truly. They’re currently going through an upgrade of sorts, and when things are back at full tilt, you know you’ll be seeing a few of us down there. When you see what’s planned for September, you’ll know exactly why, and before you know it you’ll be drafting emails to management asking them to give their bookers a raise.

Keep up with the latest music news, features, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Great Australia Bank

  • Friday, September 6th
  • w/ Adored, Close In & No Hoper
  • Get tickets here.

Australia’s post-punk bastard child is coming to the Bergy this September for a night you won’t soon forget, launching their debut LP To The Dry at what will be their biggest show to date. After a year of tearing their way across the airwaves and kicking up a fuss amongst some of Australian radio’s heaviest hitters, this devastatingly beautiful quartet has put together quite the experience for us all, a sound that feels like crumbling buildings and a rapidly approaching end.

Colour and Shade

  • Saturday, September 7th
  • w/ Engraved, Rise from Ashes, ANA & Haladrene
  • Get tickets here.

Alt-rockers Colour and Shade are gearing up to make an explosive debut on the Bergy stage on the 7th, and they’ve got plenty of friends hanging out in the back seats too! It’ll be quite the cavalcade with Engraved, Rise from Ashes, ANA and Haladrene warming the place up before the band of honour makes their final stand under the bright lights, complete with all those metalcore flavours we’ve come to expect from these cats.

Sunday School

  • Sunday, September 8th
  • w/ MILKSICK, Dolls & Unscored
  • Get tickets here.

On Sundays, the Bergy will play host to Sunday School, a series of matinee performances showcasing some of the hottest bands in the city right now, with plenty of cheap beer and good grub on offer just to sweeten the deal a little more. We’re in for a real treat this week, with psychedelic-garage fiends MILKSICK, punk maniacs Dolls and forces of nature Unscored.

Majak Door

  • Friday, September 13th
  • Saturday, September 14th (matinee show + ALL AGES)
  • w/ Taylor Carroll & Glob (13th)
  • w/ Hassal & Harriet Wraith (14th)
  • Get tickets here (13th)
  • Get tickets here (14th)

Melbourne indie favourites Majak Door have two (two!) shows planned for us this September at the Bergy, the second of the two being an all-ages show, which we’re sure will make a few of our younger music fans very, very happy. This is quite the special band, pulling sounds from dream-pop and psychedelia to make music that feels like the tide coming in and out, revealing little treasures and such from the deep blue.

Osaka Punch

  • Saturday, September 14th
  • w/ Sentia & Trubug
  • Get tickets here

Brisbane groove-rockers Osaka Punch are making their way down the coast on the 14th. These apes from up north bring something special to the table, each song is an exploration into satire and wit; it gets really difficult to tell whether their lyrics are serious or not, but that little voice inside is quickly quietened by the calibre of the riff on offer from these cats, you’ll be too busy headbanging to even care.

Merci, Mercy

  • Thursday, September 19th
  • w/ Lashes
  • Get tickets here.

The magnificent, the ethereal, the oh-so-magnanimous Merci, Mercy is making a stop at the humble Bergy for one night only this September. Merci, Mercy embraces the sensibilities of alt-pop in many ways, though with a unique twist, something you’ll just have to come and see for yourself.

Scarn’On

  • Friday, September 20th
  • w/ Rockafella & Trench
  • Get tickets here.

These boys hailing from parts unknown know how to do one thing and one thing only; fire off a maelstrom of unadulterated, balls-to-the-wall hard rock to the masses, as fast as possible, as loud as possible, and for as long as possible (until they’re inevitably removed from the premises). You’ll definitely want to hold onto your nuts for this one, as they’ll be launching their debut LP Go Hard or Go Home, and it really doesn’t seem like they’re going home any time soon. *gulp*, we may be in a little danger here…

Noctica

  • Saturday, September 21st
  • w/ Broken Earth, UltraVit & Mani Blu
  • Get tickets here.

This trans-genre, transgressive and transgender songstress is making her way down to the Bergy on the 21st, delivering an intense metal-flavoured experience that’s sure to have you equal parts entirely out of your depth, and entirely enthralled, making for an experience that’s entirely out of body, backed up by a posse that’s sure to extend your stay far beyond what you had planned. When you’re not too busy floating about the ceiling like a bunch of party balloons with your fellow punters, you might be able to steal a few beer sips and maybe a chip or two.

TILE

  • Friday, September 27th
  • Guests TBA
  • Get tickets here.

Bringing an anthemic and euphoric sound, TILE are sure to have you hovering just millimetres off the floor on the 27th as they launch their debut EP Human On Hold Vol. 1, a proof-of-concept for their distinctive sound that has made them the talk of the town. They’ve managed to capture a slice of the 20-something experience in Australia, and when pushed through a lens of post-punk and the new-wave, you get quite the potent mix.

  • Saturday, September 28th
  • w/ MACËY (SA), Jesse Melancholy (SA), Parker Indigo (SA), Junko, Lyrah Grey, Complextra, Tommii, Kvn (WA), Bryce Morgan (QLD), Ell4 (QLD)
  • Get tickets here.

We won’t be giving too much away, because where’s the fun in that? What we will tell you instead is this: on the 28th, South Australian hyper-pop tastemakers Jesse Melancholy and MACËY have procured some of the hottest artists from the Australian hyper-pop soundscape, and they’ve decided to call mass in the Bergy Bandroom. If you feel like you’re ready to worship, then certainly make your way down.
