The Coburg Makers Market is a community gem run on DIY spirit and it’s coming back better than ever

Words by Staff Writer

We've delighted in covering makers markets across Melbourne's north for many years, but we're especially excited for 2023's twilight edition on November 4 and their Christmas weekender on December 2-3.

The Coburg Makers Market (CMM) is fast becoming a staple of the arts community in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, focused on art, design and most of all, community engagement. It’s becoming a crucial gathering place for makers and fans of authentic, artisanal goods – the quality of which you can only source at these kinds of grassroots events.

CMM began in June 2022 as a platform for local creatives in Merri-bek to showcase their work and connect with the community post-lockdown. With the first market supported by Merri-bek Arts, it’s now run independently and is absolutely thriving, becoming a highly popular and diverse breeding ground for Melbourne’s creative talent and fostering increased accessibility for both seasoned vendors and newcomers.

Beyond its commercial aspect, CMM has become a vital social and creative space, uniting local artists and their community. So, it’s pretty exciting whenever one takes place.

The next market, a Twilight edition, is scheduled for November 4 from 3pm to 8pm at the beautiful Coburg Studios, a creative hub situated in a former packaging factory. If you’ve never been, it’s well worth a venture.

Coburg Studios began in late 2020 after Brunswick’s wave of gentrification overtook the former Ballarat Street studio site (the now demolished former Hard Yakka / Perucci Shirts textile factory).

The twilight market will feature more than 60 local makers, artists, and designers presenting their creations. Additionally, there will be an art workshop hosted by Alula Fox and live music performances by Joscelyn Wynter and Flora, along with open community DJ sets hosted by event illustrator Lydia Cross.

Food options include offerings from Rock Star Taco and Purple Rabbit Foot Trailer, which cater to a vegan diet. Moreover, the market and its spaces provide an ideal opportunity for enjoying the (finally) gorgeous weather and extended sunshine into the later hours.

After that, the market organisers are planning a Christmas Market weekender across December 2-3 that will sort your Christmas shopping in one fell swoop (and save your relatives from the usual re-gifting as well).
