Iranian culture is well-known for its richness, multi-dimensionality, and influence. Melbourne’s Iranian community boasts musicians representing classical, traditional and contemporary aspects of Iranian musical culture. Can these diverse angles meet? Bringing together personal perspectives of these influences through music, poetry and improvisation, this performance shares a perspective on finding new connections through the joy of shared creativity informed by tradition and experimentation.
Mastaneh Nazarian
Four Gestures
Iranian born guitarist, Mastanah Nazarian migrated to America in 1985 where she learnt the guitar and began exploring music simultaneously whilst learning to live in a new cultural landscape and learning to speak a new language. For Mastaneh, Iranian musical traditions and ways of experiencing them is part of how she sees the world. Her musical compositions, although Western in temperament and in tuning, relate to how she sees the world through pictures and stories. This performance shares various sung perspectives on love and war through her experiences; four simple gestures in time.
Misagh Zamani Ensemble
Misagh Zamani was born in a musical family in Iran, and began performing with his father’s
band at the age of 4. A musical prodigy at a young age, Misagh soon learnt to play 16 instruments, from classical such as piano, guitar and clarinet to traditional daf, setar, oud and duduk to name a few. Since arriving in Australia in 2013 he has been looking for a way of sharing his music with broader society. A virtuoso pianist and medical sonographer Misagh says: “I want my music to be the voice of abandoned cultures, buried histories, and forgotten arts. My goal is to bring oneness and unity between all sounds and instruments, to produce a unique music that sound familiar to all international listeners.”
Misagh’s program will feature Reza Kashi (tar, setar, and oud) Negar Nik (vocal and kemanche)
Farid Kazemi (Persian percussion) and himself on piano, accordion, duduk, and percussion.
