That new movie Dune? Not as good as June at The Beast!

The Beast
La Descarga
words by ewen stewart

Time to go Beast mode.

The Beast is anything but beastly. In fact, despite its ultra-spice hot sauces and graffiti-adorned walls, it’s surprisingly welcoming – the perfect place to duck in if you need an escape from the cold.

The Brunswick East joint has exactly what you need, whether you’re looking for a lip-smackin’ BBQ feed or some classy evening entertainment. Or both at the same time – why not? Hedonistic, yes, but that’s what the Beast is all about. And that’s what we love em for.

Keep up with the latest music news, features, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

This month, the stage will welcome Melbourne dance-punk faves Dole Manchild, nine-piece soul-funk groovers Golden Hour and even a band playing only the music from a certain director’s body of work – read on to find out more.

And guess what? Bands at The Beast are free, so keep that wallet closed and save your pennies for a pound of wings or something of the like. You really can’t go wrong.

Tommy Dynamite

  • Friday 7th June

Tommy Dynamite blends really smooth and silky guitar tones with rough, gritty vocals that tear the genre line to shreds. The guitars will tease you into a false sense of security before the vocals scream at you and tell you this ain’t the place for couch dwelling.

The Tarantinos

  • Saturday 8th June

No hidden message or surprising genre flip here – The Tarantinos play all of your favourite hits from the films of the one and only Quentin Tarantino. They’ll be playing a double set at The Beast on the 8th of June. If you’re a ‘tino head, come indulge in the nostalgia from Reservoir Dogs to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Dole Manchild

  • Sunday 9th June

The explosive seven-piece supergroup Dole Manchild are ready to fire The Beast crowd into oblivion when they f-ur-shit-up on the 9th of June. Fronted by Argentinian Dan Blitzman, Dole Manchild have turned their future-surf-dance-punk into a staple in the Melbourne music scene. They will give you a headache that you won’t want to get rid of (this is a weirdly good feeling).

La Descarga

  • Saturday 15th June

As winter rolls in we have the perfect remedy to forget the cold and rain for one night only. You’ll dance the night away at The Beast on the 15th of June with La Descarga as your soundtrack for the evening, bursting with Latin flavour and tropical fruits. You’ll be shakin’ your booty and asking for a top-up on your pina colada coconut.

Golden Hour

  • Friday 21st June
  • With Fairtrade Narcotics

It’ll be a tight squeeze on the 21st of June as nine-piece soul/funk outfit Golden Hour grace The Beast stage. Silky horn lines, delicate vocal harmonies and endless grooves are just the root notes of Golden Hour’s extra delicious soul sandwich. They’ll be joined by jazz-rockers Fairtrade Narcotics and you’re sure to be cleansed come the end of the night.

Wizard Tricks

  • Saturday 22nd June

Psychedelic punk-rockers Wizard Tricks will alakazam your feet into a fit of boogie and make your mum say “what’s that racket?”. Content warning! Extra fuzz and whammy bar on each track. You may need to call in sick tomorrow as you’ll need at least a day to recover.

Bifter

  • Friday 28th June

Stoner rock at its finest, Bifter creates a wall of sound that thrashes through your egg-carton soundproofing and demands the eggs to be returned at once. It doesn’t really know what it’s doing but it’s assured in its demands. This is one for the heavy-head stoners – you’ll find yourself centre stage without realising.
