These Melbourne guys have the type of sound that makes one think they can do what Birds of Tokyo have done in recent times, that is, have one foot in the alternative scene and one in the mainstream rock scene, and do it to great effect and massive success. Such is their potential.

These Melbourne guys have the type of sound that makes one think they can do what Birds of Tokyo have done in recent times, that is, have one foot in the alternative scene and one in the mainstream rock scene, and do it to great effect and massive success. Such is their potential.

And they do so by remaining interesting as well as accessible.

There’s plenty going on here. They cover straight out alternative rock, poppier moments, a piano based ballad (that seriously works), heavier sections and even some RnB influenced tones, all in the space of a five track EP. There’s an uplifting tone to the vocals that is pretty rare in alternative music, and makes the experience pretty damn easy on the ear. This isn’t for hardcore metal heads, but a listener who digs anyone from Powderfinger to Jeff Buckley to the aforementioned Birds of Tokyo will get something very positive out of this.

Again the sheer quality and diversity of Melbourne’s music scene astounds. It seems that every time you turn around there’s another band on the scene that you’ve missed, who make highly interesting and listenable music. And Sunset Circus are yet another of these. Their EP is just a joy to behold, and if all was well in the world this would gain them a sizable initial following, move several hundred and even thousand units and fund the recording of their first album at some stage in the next 12 months.

Alas and alack, with the industry in the shape it’s in, that probably won’t happen. But hopefully a debut long player, as well as a significantly increased profile, isn’t too far away anyway.
