Suburban Rail Loop construction powers ahead with tunnelling starting next year and trains by 2035.

Suburban Rail Loop has more than 3000 people working on major construction across Melbourne’s east and south east. Tunnelling work kicks off next year as the massive infrastructure project moves closer to delivering trains to passengers by 2035.

Suburban Rail Loop will connect six new stations at Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill as part of creating better connectivity for Melbourne’s growing population. Beyond transport, SRL doubles as Australia’s largest housing project, designed to deliver thousands more homes close to jobs, services and train stations.

Construction activity continues ramping up across the corridor as the project shapes thriving, vibrant communities around each station precinct. While major works get underway, the SRL Community Projects Fund has opened a second round of grants to support local initiatives during this period of significant development.

Suburban Rail Loop Community Projects Fund offers grants between $10,000 and $80,000 for local groups, schools and not-for-profit organisations near station areas. First round supported nearly 80 projects including netball courts, community gardens, multicultural festivals and educational programs across the corridor.

Victorian government’s SRL represents a fundamental shift in how Melbourne approaches urban development, combining transport infrastructure with housing delivery in areas that will become major activity centres. Each station precinct aims to create dense, walkable neighbourhoods with direct rail connections.

Project timeline has tunnelling commencing next year as Suburban Rail Loop construction moves underground, marking a major milestone in the delivery of what will become a game-changing piece of Melbourne’s transport network.
