The Victorian government's Suburban Rail Loop will dramatically reduce travel times across Melbourne when construction completes.

The Suburban Rail Loop is set to connect major universities, hospitals and employment hubs while removing 600,000 cars from roads daily.

Advanced transport modelling reveals the landmark infrastructure project will cut journey times for commuters, students and patients throughout the metropolitan area.

Premier Jacinta Allan and Minister for Suburban Rail Loop Harriet Shing released the SRL Travel Time Savings report at the Burwood construction site on 29 June.

The Burwood station sits directly opposite Deakin University, providing the campus with its first direct train service.

Suburban Rail Loop

  • Daily passenger capacity: 70,000 passengers
  • Cars removed from roads: 600,000 daily
  • Housing delivery: 70,000 homes around stations

The Suburban Rail Loop report demonstrates significant time savings for various journeys across Melbourne.

Students travelling from Cheltenham to Deakin University will complete the trip in just 19 minutes by public transport, saving 40 minutes compared to current options.

Healthcare workers will benefit enormously, with nurses living in Burwood reaching Box Hill Hospital in only 3.5 minutes.

Social connections will improve as students studying in Caulfield save 17 minutes on their 39-minute journey to Glen Waverley.

Patients travelling from Frankston to Monash Medical Centre in Clayton will reduce their journey time by 15 minutes through seamless interchange at Southland Station.

The project will accommodate 70,000 daily passengers while supporting Australia’s largest housing initiative.

The Suburban Rail Loop will enable construction of 70,000 homes around station precincts, providing young Victorians with affordable housing options near world-class transport infrastructure.

Construction progress continues at all six station sites with up to 8000 jobs created.

The Burwood site features two massive cranes and excavation equipment digging the tunnel boring machine launch site, now 15 metres deep.

Four tunnel boring machines will launch from Burwood next year, with two heading towards Glen Waverley and two towards Box Hill.

The comprehensive transport solution will transform how Melburnians live, work and travel throughout the growing metropolis.

Whether residents live in Frankston, Footscray or Fawkner, the Suburban Rail Loop promises faster, more convenient journeys.
