Stephen K Amos : Welcome To My World

stephen-k-amos.jpg

Stephen K Amos’ new show Welcome To My World is a frank and honest hour of comedy. After demanding a second entrance after not being impressed with the audience reaction the first time around, Amos quickly settles into a routine that embraces the use of audience participation throughout the entire show. It’s in these interactions that Amos really shines and proves that, in the right hands, audience participation does not have to be a scary thing. Amos seamlessly weaves the audience interaction into his own routine and leaves the audience with plenty to laugh about.

When not riffing with the audience, Amos takes us through a number of topics, including sibling rivalry, being stuck in traffic, bad experiences on planes, internet trolls and the fear people have of public speaking. Woven throughout these anecdotes are a number of jokes specifically tailored for an Australian audience, with Tony Abbott being a key target, much to the delight of the audience. However, the main disappointment of Amos’ show is his reliance on cue cards – anytime he looks at them, even if just for a second or two, the show seems to lose its pace.

Despite this, Amos is a talented and clever performer who clearly knows how to work an audience to his advantage, while the show is a genuinely witty and fun night out.
