Have you ever heard of a clean comedy act that can actually make you laugh? Here it is. Squeaky Clean Comedy is the brainchild of Eugene Wong, the Managing Director of Candlelight Productions.
Candlelight Productions specializes in showpieces that are uplifting and encouraging, without the gritty language or crude humour. Explaining how they pull it off and keep it entertaining, Wong says, “Our requirements are really basic. Firstly, it has to be funny – we find that’s helpful in a comedy show. After that, we wash out comedians’ mouths with soap if we think they’re out of line. Seriously though, it’s not too hard if you specifically try to recruit comedians with a heart for building people up. We honour them and ask them to honour our audiences.”
Candlelight did a test run of Squeaky Clean Comedy several years ago at Chapel Off Chapel, and after an exceptionally positive response, decided it was worth doing again in a new format and on a much grander scale. In keeping with their dedication to supporting the community, a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales for Squeaky Clean Comedy will go to the Melbourne-based organization Thankyou Water to provide clean water for people in developing countries.
Even though he grew up on the stage and loves performing, Wong himself admits, “I’m a connoisseur of corny dad humor…Come to think of it, people only ever seem to laugh at me when I’m trying to be serious.” So he sticks to producing other performers. “These days I prefer to produce other artists I believe in, and try to give them a foot up so they can positively impact our culture.”
