Spontaneous Broadway simultaneously salutes and satirises musical theatre

Australia’s favourite improvised musical comedy team returns to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival with a twist to their unprepared genius: Guest Stars will direct the musical you vote for – on the spot and totally unrehearsed.

Guest stars include: Shaun Micallef, Wilbur Wilde, Colin Lane, Fiona O’Loughlin, Mike McLeish, Matt Hetherington, Jane Clifton, and Matt Parkinson who will join cast Colette Mann, Scott Brennan, Emily Taheny, Rik Brown and Emily Taylor, together with host extraordinaire Russell Fletcher and John Thorn on piano.

Spontaneous Broadway simultaneously salutes and satirises musical theatre. Every show is completely different as the masterful all-star guest cast manage to turn audience song titles into a full musical, complete with an incredible improvised overture, dance scenes, love duets, and mad costumes changes.

Originally invented by Kat Koppett and New York Freestyle Repertory, Spontaneous Broadway has enjoyed a decade of massive success in Australia. It won a special Melbourne Fringe Award in 2000, and has since wowed crowds everywhere, selling out the Sydney Opera House, MICF, Adelaide Cabaret Festival and The Famous Spiegeltent in Melbourne and Edinburgh.

Spontaneous Broadway perform Random Musical at The Famous Spiegeltent from April 13 – April 17. It’s at 2pm Wednesday – Sunday. Tickets are $18/$16 and available through 1300 182 183, theartscentre.com.au/kids and at the door.
