Spin Off DJ comp returns for season two with 20 new hopefuls

Words by staff writer

Sticky Sessions has revealed the full DJ roster for Spin Off's second season, running from 18 September to a grand final on 18 December.

Naarm’s emerging DJs have another shot at the spotlight, with Spin Off back for a bigger, collaborative second season.

Run by female-led collective Sticky Sessions, Spin Off skips the usual battle format and sends its selectors back to back, leaning on chemistry over one-upmanship. Twenty DJs will play across four heats at Joey Smalls in Brunswick, with each heat winner progressing to the grand final on 18 December.

The comp launched last year and quickly found a footing in the local dance scene, with Sticky Sessions – a female-founded outfit set on breaking new Australian talent – putting equity and safety front and centre. Season two widens the net, pulling in fresh names from across the city’s clubs and bedroom setups.

Sticky Sessions’ Spin Off

  • Heat 1 – 18 September, Joey Smalls, Brunswick
  • Heat 2 – 9 October, Joey Smalls, Brunswick
  • Heat 3 (Halloween edition) – 30 October, Joey Smalls, Brunswick
  • Heat 4 – 20 November, Joey Smalls, Brunswick
  • Grand final – 18 December, Joey Smalls, Brunswick

Heat one sets the pace with Freeloada, Lavaridge, Soma Coma, MARIN and desginerbb, followed by TRYBULL, JennyJ, Sophreshh, phoenix and BassKat in heat two. The Halloween-themed third heat – costumes compulsory – brings goat aura, OPERATOR, DilloDilloDillo, BRACE and Angel’s Touch, before cue-d, Betty Bump, SUHA, BUZZ and XTRA CURRICULAR round things out in heat four.

There’s plenty on the line for whoever takes the title. The winner’s haul includes a year-long residency on Area3000, a paid gig and $500 via Heaps Normal, a 2027 BIGSOUND delegate pass, sets at New Guernica and on The Sound Gallery, a creative photoshoot, plus drinks, merch and gear from Casa Spirits, Peppy J’s and Store DJ.

Spin Off is the work of Sticky Sessions founder Alex Carpi, who built the comp around community and access rather than gatekeeping, giving up-and-coming selectors a room to meet, collaborate and get a foot in the door. It all unfolds at Joey Smalls, a fully accessible spot on the Route 19 tram line along Sydney Road.
