The documentary follows the Serbian performance artist as she prepares for a retrospective and the presentation of her 2010 work at MoMA in New York: The Artist is Present.
In The Artist is Present Abramović sat in the museum’s atrium, gazing straight into the eyes of whoever sat down in front of her. She did this seven hours a day, every day for three months. 1,565 sat with her while 750,000 came to watch.
The screening acts as a nod to Abramović’s current tour through Hobart and Sydney. It’s one of the first films to play at Speakeasy’s new permanent home in Grey Gardens.
