Sorry were at their enigmatic best at The Night Cat

Sorry
Words by Staff Writer

UK indie-rockers Sorry do things a little differently and it was thoroughly appreciated by a similarly eclectic crowd at The Night Cat.

Temper tantrums, western boysYou’re the expert, no, I wouldn’t question whyYou’re the looker, liquor, sugarAnd I’m the rotten apple of your eye

The fivesome from North London are signed to Domino Records and similar to two other superb Domino bands we’ve had the pleasure of interviewing recently – Wet Leg and The Kills – they meld killer guitar riffs with intimate vocals in a proven recipe for success. For example: Standout earworm Starstruck, on which Asha Lorenz knocks us out with that one-two combination, could easily be a hit from The Kills discog. A compliment, to be sure.

But Sorry have some unique weapons of their own, most notably Louis O’Bryen’s sensationally clean and powerful voice and impressive lyricism, which contrasts wonderfully with Lorenz.

Sorry started as O’Bryen and Lorenz competing during highschool to see who could make the better Soundcloud tracks, before forming a duo that eventually became a fully-fledged outfit. Given the talents, they could have easily had success as a duo, but the additions have paid off handsomely in the live arena, particularly Marco Pini on electronics who delighted with interstitial effects.

Then you have their wonderfully dry sense of humour. Sorry were originally titled Fish, before a band with the same name threatened legal action, and they changed it to – so aptly – Sorry. Lorenz epitomises that vibe onstage thanks to a glittery cowboy hat and utterly cool demeanour. It all comes together fluently and if you’re a fan – and how could you not be – then they’re thoroughly worth checking out.

Big kudos to Radio Free Alice as well, a superb support act with a big future.
