Skateboards, spraypaint and 65 artists: inside Melbourne’s wildest new show

Words by staff writer

Fort Heart presents For The Deckade 2026.

Melbourne’s skateboards are getting the gallery treatment once again at Schoolhouse Studios in Coburg.

Fort Heart’s beloved group exhibition For The Deckade is returning for its fourth instalment this February, bringing together more than 65 artists to celebrate the skateboard deck as a creative canvas. The show is curated by Fort Heart founder James Heenan, who has spent over a decade championing local creatives through collaborative projects and exhibitions across Melbourne.

For The Deckade has grown into one of the city’s most anticipated art-meets-skate events since launching at No Vacancy Gallery. Each edition invites artists from across disciplines to transform recycled skateboard decks into original works of art, with past shows attracting hundreds of attendees and selling out pieces on opening night.

For The Deckade 2026

  • Opening: 19 February, 6pm–9pm
  • Venue: Schoolhouse Studios Gallery, 28 Victoria St, Coburg
  • Price: Free
  • Beers provided by Stomping Ground and Heaps Normal

This year’s lineup features a stacked roster of Melbourne-based creatives including Mike Makatron, Brigit Maher, Clinton Gorst, Giant Swan, Fergie Stencils, Tegan Iversen, Hiro Feliciano and dozens more. The works span a huge range of styles, from stencil art and illustration to painting and mixed media, all unified by the humble skateboard deck as the shared surface.

Schoolhouse Studios provides a fitting home for the exhibition. The not-for-profit arts organisation has occupied the old Coles building in central Coburg since relocating there, offering affordable studio space to more than 80 resident artists alongside a street-front gallery and event spaces. For The Deckade 2026 will fill that gallery space with floor-to-ceiling deck art for a limited run across the opening weekend.

All works in the exhibition are available for purchase, with a full online catalogue also accessible via Fort Heart’s website for anyone who can’t make it in person. Previous editions have seen strong sales, so getting in early on the 19 February opening is well worth it.
