Planète : Guided By Flux
Concocting a celestial array of aural beacons, Planète maps out a galaxy-wide dancefloor. It ebbs and flows in a manner reminiscent to Floating Points’ non-orchestral arrangements, with the invitation of comparison working in Planète’s favour. There’s a journey here. Strap in.
Queens Of The Stone Age : The Way You Used To Do
Josh Homme and co. enlist Mark Ronson for tightly gnarled guitar production, paired with finger-snappin’ pop on the percussion. There was a snippet of a track entitled Feet Don’t Fail Me Now on a goofy promo vid that hints at something that works a lot better than The Way You Used To Do. Still, there are moments where it all clicks. You get where QOTSA are coming from, let’s see if Villains sticks the landing.
The Killers : The Man
It wouldn’t be a stretch to say Brandon Flowers extracted creative invigoration from his favourite album of last year: Alex Cameron’s Jumping The Shark (released originally in 2013). The worn-down grandiloquence found on the Sydney crooner’s LP is here on The Man, bolstered by Daft Punk-esque flourish.
Arcade Fire : Creature Comfort
There’s way too much faith in every aspect of Creature Comfort, schoolyard melody over what sounds like an ad firm’s request for ‘like The Knife, but not enough that we have to pay them.’ Small ideas from a band built on big ideas.
