Sia : Reaper
Sia has honed the craft of transposing darkness into radiant light perfectly, presented with overpowered bursts of melodic awe. Reaper is much the same, rising above into a carefree clearing of resonant platitudes (“Oh baby not today”) alongside exorcisms of the titular subject. It’s potent, compounded by Sia’s constant ability to play to her strengths while remaining dynamic with each release.
Kanye West : Real Friends
This is good with a capital G.O.O.D, a marked improvement on the lacklustre NYE release of Facts. But still, it’s not exactly assuring for Swish (now with confirmed February 11 release), utilising a Madlib beat that was supposedly delivered ahead of the My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy sessions. It shows Yeezy in mellow honesty – realness in effect. How will it fit into the narrative of album? Or will it even be on the album? Have faith in Yeezus.

Tyrannamen : You Should Leave Him
You would think there’s little left to do with blues-rock boogie, but here are Tyrannamen sounding like a geyser from a bountiful well of untapped riffs. You Should Leave Him carries the heartfelt sincerity of I Can’t Read, the protagonist almost pathetic in earnest cries of “You should leave him and be with me”, artful in its introspection. That pathetic plea, it feels good to nestle into resignation and project outward, honesty nullifying vulnerability – or embracing it, even. Hear this live with mates, if you can.
