Shoegaze trailblazers Ride announce Australian tour this August

Ride
words by staff writer

Ride, the British band that epitomized the shoegaze movement of the late '80s and early '90s, is heading down under for a run of dates.

In August, shoegazers in Australia and New Zealand will have the chance to see the genre’s pioneers live and loud. In support of their latest album, Interplay, Ride will be bringing their enormous pedal boards on tour with American indie psych-rock icons Mercury Rev.

Hailing from Oxford, England, Ride burst onto the scene in 1988, setting the standard for shoegaze with their debut album, Nowhere. This seminal work not only inspired a generation of musicians but also laid the groundwork for a genre that continues to influence artists to this day. With Interplay, their seventh studio album, Ride proves that their creative fire still burns brightly.

Released in the wake of their reunion, Interplay is a testament to Ride’s enduring relevance. Building upon the success of their previous albums, Weather Diaries and This Is Not A Safe Place, the band explores new sonic territories while staying true to their signature sound.

Drawing inspiration from ’80s pop icons like Tears For Fears and Talk Talk, Ride crafts a sonic landscape that is both familiar and forward-thinking.

For fans in Australia and New Zealand, the chance to experience Ride live is fast approaching. This August, the band will embark on a national tour, treating audiences to their electrifying performances and timeless classics alongside Mercury Rev.

Led by Jonathan Donahue and Sean ‘Grasshopper’ Mackowiak, Mercury Rev has carved out their own niche in the music world, blending psychedelic sounds with avant-garde sensibilities. With a discography that spans over three decades, Mercury Rev continues to push the boundaries of their craft, culminating in their latest project, The Delta Sweete Revisited.

Featuring collaborations with acclaimed artists like Norah Jones and Phoebe Bridgers, The Delta Sweete Revisited is a testament to Mercury Rev’s enduring creativity and influence. As they join Ride on stage, audiences can expect a night of unforgettable performances and sonic exploration.
