He’ll be joined by turntablist Spin Master A-1 and Sam Nakamura for what promises to be an emotional ride through 15 years of music history.

The Luv(sic) series traces back to late 2000, when Shing02 received a beat tape from Tokyo producer Jun Seba, better known by his anagram Nujabes. Their collaboration was initially conceived as an ode to hip hop itself, but took on deeper meaning after Nujabes died in a car accident in February 2010. The final three instalments were pieced together posthumously – the sixth built entirely from an unfinished loop recovered from the producer’s phone. It was released three years to the day after his death.

Shing02’s biography reads like a geography lesson: Tokyo-born, childhood split between Tanzania and England, then a move to California where he embedded himself in the Bay Area’s underground rap scene throughout the ’90s. That circuitous path eventually led him back to Japan and into Nujabes’ orbit.

The tour follows successful Hexalogy performances across North America and Europe, where Shing02 has been honouring his late collaborator’s memory alongside live musicians. For Australian fans who’ve been spinning these records for two decades, this is the chance to finally experience them in person.

Tickets go on sale 22 January at 11am local time.
