A free, rum-soaked rave: ‘Pirates and drum and bass actually have a lot in common’

Rum and Bass
Words by Juliette Salom

Ahoy ye mateys! Hyperfix is taking over the pirate ship of Section 8 with a treasure chest of bangers for Rum and Bass.

Pirates everywhere, unite. There’s one blimey of booty coming to Naarm’s container bar on Thursday, May 29 as Hyperfix brings Rum and Bass to Section 8. Delivering a line-up of bass-enthusiasts that will have you shiver-me-timbers-ing, this free event invites first mates and scallywags from all over to come together for a party fit for the seven seas.

From 6pm until late, Hyperfix will deliver a rotation of some of the best beat-makers going around. Expect rum specials by Bumbu Rum, plenty of bass, some cheeky games, and enough pirates to sink a ship.

At the helm of this ship is Kia, founder of Hyperfix and spinner of tunes under the name Clickbait.

The DJ says that the thematic inspiration of the night will no doubt add a whole new layer to the party, giving her “permission to get a bit cheeky and dramatic with the set. I’m channelling that swashbuckling energy. We are on a voyage – no maps, just vibes.”

“Pirates and drum and bass actually have a lot in common when you think about it,” Kia reflects. “There’s a raw, rebellious energy at the core of both. Pirates went against the grain, carved their own paths, and created their own rules – just like drum and bass did when it emerged from the underground scene.

“The music and pirate life kind of mirror each other – it’s loud, it’s unruly, and it invites you to break free and lose yourself in the moment.”

Loud, unruly and liberating is exactly what punters can expect from Rum and Bass, especially with a line-up this special on the cards. “Keep your ears peeled for scene heavyweights like Stackpackers, Niix, and SK4NK,” Kia recommends. “They’re all known for their energy, individuality, and versatility. Stackpackers are even bringing some originals to the decks.

“Tough Break is rising fast with his own productions and championing Aussie talent, while Feed Hydra brings infectious vibes for his Hyperfix debut.

“Unmarked Billz – a Hyperfix favourite – is on the close. And if history repeats, he’ll turn that slot to solid gold. You can’t forget our hour of power from Lickweed, a true captain of the craft.”

Speaking of captains, the leader of this galleon is gearing up for a ship-load of treasure-perfect booty herself. “I want it to be energetic and cheeky,” Kia says about her own set as Clickbait.

“There will be some big rolling bass lines and some playful samples. Plus, a few surprises that’ll make people feel like they’ve just stumbled into an underground pirate rave. Expect some jungle vibes, some classics, and a bit of chaos. Somewhat like a treasure chest of tunes.”

“Just imagine a room full of pirates raving”

Known for throwing killer parties that vary across the music – and thematic – spectrum, perhaps there is no better place to dock this event than at Naarm’s Section 8. For Kia, playing at Section 8 is always a memorable time.

“I love playing at Section 8 because it feels like there’s no pressure and no restrictions,” she says. “Just a boiler room vibe surrounded by people who are all there to express themselves and have a boogie.

“My usual nerves around performing always disappear and I just jam out the best I can, and I’ve never had a bad time. Potentially some of the best sets I’ve played have been at Section 8! Not to mention, the venue team are second to none.”

While the music will be by the Hyperfix crew and the drink menu is sorted by Bumbu Rum, Section 8 aren’t skimping out with any of the extra details. Pirate ship decor will be curated by Saoko Collective, and games – like walk the plank and a treasure hunt – will keep you aye-aye-ing between sets.

And if that’s not enough to tie you overboard and get you down at the container bar on May 29, Kia suggests to “just imagine a room full of pirates raving to bass. It’s going to be fun and chaos in the best possible way.”
