Although Melburnians complain tirelessly about the winter, it really is something special.
Whether it’s the fog in the air, the fallen leaves or the long nights that give us plenty of time to get up to trouble, the cold months have their own unique charm. This year, Seaworks is celebrating the peak of the season with a vibrant Winter Solstice Festival on the evening of Friday, June 21.
Traditionally, the winter solstice signifies renewal, rebirth and a return to light. Seaworks is leaning into this concept, bringing together a dazzling display of circus performers, art installations, live music and market stalls as well as a decadent feast of food and drink.
For one night only, the Williamstown precinct will be transformed with light, magic and song. There’s so much happening at this free, family-friendly celebration, so grab your friends, rug up and get ready for a night you won’t soon forget.

Mesmerising performers

Prepare for some out-of-this-world performances to pop up where you least expect them. From the incredible acrobatics of The Sway‘s high-flying pole work to the hilarious absurdity of the Giant Seagulls and the creep-tastic Skull Squires, the evening will be full of surprises. The performers will be roaming through the area, so keep your eyes peeled as you enjoy everything else has to offer.
Art installations

As well as the performers, there will be massive art pieces installed throughout the area, adding colour and wonder to the experience. The enormous, shimmering Golden Eagle made by the Australian creative multi-disciplinary arts company A Blanck Canvas is one to look out for as well as some truly unbelievable inflatable sculptures.
Live music
Let the buttery-smooth sounds of Sweethearts warm you from the inside out. The Geelong-based all-female band will be bringing their signature blend of Motown and soul to the Seaworks stage, with infectious grooves, stunning vocal harmonies and brilliant horns. Whether you’re dancing in the crowd or listening from afar, their affable tunes will provide the perfect soundtrack to the evening.
Maritime History

One of the things that makes Seaworks stand out is its age-old maritime history. At one point, Williamstown was Victoria’s major port and the area played a big role in the foundation of the city of Melbourne. Of course, the Maritime Museum is open during the day, welcoming visitors to come in and learn more about the history of our city and its relationship with seafaring. During the festival, visitors can check out the craftsmanship of traditional wooden boat building.

If all the action’s got you feeling a little peckish, you’re in the right place. Williamstown is known for having some of the best fish and chips in Melbourne and you’ll have a chance to get your hands on a plate as well as plenty of other hearty and satisfying options as you wander through the grounds. Plus, it’s Friday night, right? Which means it’s time to wind down with a drink or three. Craft beers or botanical gins pair perfectly with the seaside vibes, or grab a mug of mulled wine to warm your hands.
