Robert Burns Hotel gets new name, new owners and a retractable roof

Hotel Collingwood

The Robert Burns Hotel is now the Hotel Collingwood, with an outside area covered by a retractable roof.

New owners Only Hospitality took over the storied Robert Burns Hotel venue in June and have extensively renovated the inside, and were ready to open in August but have been prevented by lockdowns.

Now the venue is opening at at 12pm this Friday for the first time in its newest iteration, with three dining spaces and a public bar. The menu has a new Asian-fusion feel, with one of the chefs from Hawker Hall.

What you need to know

  • The Robert Burns Hotel is dead, long live Hotel Collingwood
  • It will reopen with a new look and some upgraded features this Friday
  • It’s from Only Hospitality, who have also just opened Vermont General Store

It can sit 80 diners across its indoor, kerbside and courtyard seating, which has a swanky retractable roof to acclimatise to the Melbourne weather.

Named after the Scottish poet, The Robert Burns hotel was a 19th century pub that for most of its contemporary history boasted a Spanish influenced menu.

In addition to the beer garden, it was also a heavily footy-focused venue that used to run a promotion where if Collingwood won, beers were free for half an hour. They were also a fairly popular place to watch League.

The new owners have also just launched the Vermont General Store cafe in Melbourne’s East.
