There’s the clean comedian, the unintentionally offensive comedian

There’s the clean comedian, the unintentionally offensive comedian, the on-the-nose comedian, and then there’s the much-lauded stand-up of Reginald D. Hunter.

It might be offensive to some people, but it’s a style that has worked wonders for his public profile. He’s been described by The Age as “vulgar, absurd and quite wonderful”, so there’s reason to suspect that his tongue-in-cheek humour has been a hit with audiences.

Hailing from Georgia, USA, Hunter’s brand of comedy has some distinct American touches; he apparently titled one of his more recent shows Trophy Nigga because he found that people generally only wanted commentary from him on race-related topics.

Having initially attended the Royal Academy Of Dramatic Art in the UK, it didn’t take long for Hunter to work out his strengths lay in cracking jokes instead of acting. And since he has no props to cover his blunders, Hunter relies on a strong comedy script, laced with a surprising amount of insight into human nature.

Consistently strong reviews have earned him three nominations for the Perrier (now Edinburgh Comedy) award, and a Writers’ UK Guild Award For Comedy.

Reginald D Hunter will be performing at The Forum Theatre Downstairs from March 31 – April24. It’s at 9.45pm Tuesday – Saturday and 8.45pm on Sundays. Tickets are $25 – $34 and available from Ticketmaster, 1300 660 013 and at the door.
