Red Frogs, pizza and hot crossed buns: Try whacky beers at this Melbourne festival

GABS

The Great Australian Beer Spectapular (see what they did there?) will be on this month at Melbourne's Royal Exhibition Building.

Technology has come a long way since the ancient Sumerians first brewed the first brew in the mountains of Iran. I bet those guys would never believe the kind of stuff we’re doing today – AKA making beer that tastes like freaking pizza.

In many ways, the GABS is a celebration of how far brewing has come. With events in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, the roaming festival will be debuting a whopping 120 different beers from breweries across the country and the world – bringing them all under one roof for your tasting enjoyment. In Melbourne, it’s all going down on the weekend of May 19 to 21.

GABS 2023

  • The festival will run at Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building from May 19 to 21
  • It will feature over 60 brewery bars, meet-and-greets with beer makers, music, games, entertainment and more
  • Tickets are on sale now

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne here.

The beers in question cover the whole field, from classic ales and lagers to brewskis unlike anything you’ve ever gulped down before.

Here’s a snapshot of some of the funkier creations that will be up for grabs at the Melbourne event: Bright’s jam donut ale, King River’s sticke coffee kolsch, Blackman’s Red Frog and raspberry lager, Mismatch brewing’s hot cross buns quad, and yes – Flexi’s pizza gose.

Drinking aside, there will also be a ton of activities to keep you busy. Try your hand at Mick Fanning’s Battler Tins of Glory qualifier series – basically, slide some cans down a table for your chance to be flown out to the finals on the Gold Coast where you could win $50,000 in cash and prizes.

There will also be an air guitar competition, a ‘Wheel of Pourtune’, a silent disco, a basketball shootout, brewing masterclasses, food trucks and roving bands throughout the weekend.

Your ticket price includes a complimentary commemorative tasting glass, a five-and-a-half-hour time session, and access to all of the activities, meet-and-greets and breweries in the events centre.
