The festival kicks off with a bang, presenting We Were Dangerous, a rallying cry for fierce teen solidarity featuring Rima Te Wiata and a crew of talented young actors. This joyful rebellion sets the tone for a program that’s not afraid to flip the bird to convention.

Following hot on its heels is the wickedly funny Aussie black comedy Audrey, starring the brilliant Jackie van Beek as a washed-up soap star who nicks her comatose daughter’s identity.

The special screening comes with a panel discussion on gender-balanced hiring in the film industry, featuring ReFrame founders who’ve put their stamp on flicks like Barbie and Shiva Baby.

Horror hounds, prepare to lose your shit at The AlmostMidnightMovieMarathon, a blood-soaked collaboration with TILDE Film Festival. The double feature serves up T Blockers, where ancient parasites feed on hatred, and Grafted, a Mean Girls meets Face/Off body horror that’s definitely not for the squeamish.

The shorts program is equally wild, with five dynamite selections spanning from wedding jitters to gnome kidnappings. ARTRAGEOUS! presents a rare look at experimental films from the 90s and early 2000s – a riotgrrl blast from the feminist past that’ll melt your brain in the best possible way.

For aspiring filmmakers, there’s a killer masterclass on visual storytelling with art department guru Lucy Gouldthorpe, teaching punters how to create movie magic without the Hollywood budget. Industry pros can also hit up The Lifecycle of Film for intimate roundtable sessions with screen experts.

Whether you’re into teen rebellion, body horror, avant-garde weirdness or films that simply refuse to play by the rules, MWFF has got you covered. With over 40 world-class features, shorts and special events, it’s the perfect place to discover the badass women who are reshaping cinema one frame at a time.
