Moon Holiday was the first to grace the stage at Boney with a long dress over white sneakers. As she opened up her set with smooth, hypnotic vocals, coupled with synth lines that seemed to set the audience that came to see her in a trance, she motioned for the smoke machine to be turned up for better atmosphere. True to her name, and using her synth pads almost effortlessly, Moon Holiday was like something from another planet. Crooning pop melodies into the microphone with a touch of experimental flavour, she took the room by storm, and made fans out of most people who saw her.
Donning the stage with a weird leopard printed shirt, HTMLFlowers immediately launched into a tirade of screaming into the microphone, which made the room unsure whether he was rapping or just yelling. Nevertheless, it worked for him. Some of the beats he was over were raw, and hard as hell. It’s like this guy could charm you from a mile away while talking to you in between songs, yet launch into a completely different person while performing. It became apparent quite quickly that this was obviously an act, and becomes stale after a while through beats that sounded almost exactly the same. Not to mention him reading the lyrics off his phone.
Rainbow Chan is stunning. It’s really hard to say otherwise, and there isn’t many like her at all. Obviously influenced by the stylings and antics of Icelandic prima donna Bjork, and having just released new material a few weeks prior, Rainbow was not pulling any punches. Launching into a cut from her latest album, Last, a dance pop banger that immediately set the tone for almost an hour set filled with soaring vocals that sounded beautiful amongst all the sleek production. Joined by Moon Holiday on backing vocals and synth, Rainbow Chan delivered Shell, a track that sounds like old school R&B, dripping with raw emotion and psychedelia.
As colourful as she was playful, it’s hard to believe Rainbow Chan isn’t more successful. Pure talent will always prevail, and upon watching this set, it was clear that Rainbow is more than a vocalist. She’s a true artist in every way, through the way she dresses, and the way she performs, winning hearts and minds alike with cute dance moves motioning for crowd involvement. A true artist at heart, but a fun and loveable soul.
