On February 3, Footscray Community Arts will be immersed in the creative spirit.

Inspiration, connection and fresh perspective: Queer Out West has it all. Taking place on the afternoon of February 3 at Footscray Community Arts, the beloved free day party offers an audio-visual feast featuring some of the most exciting queer art coming out of Melbourne.

Kicking off at 2pm, the event brings together the much-anticipated launch of Queer PHOTO and PHOTO 2024, a screening of a film by Yankunytjatjara man Derik Lynch and an all-First Nations lineup of live musicians and DJs.

The event will open with artist talks celebrating the official opening of Queer PHOTO and PHOTO 2024, which will run through March and May respectively. This year, the beloved PHOTO 2024 exhibition features the work of Australian-Fijian artist Salote Tawale who will be presenting her series Exquisite Corpse.

Queer PHOTO will showcase pieces by Clifford Prince King, Derik Lynch, Matthew Thorne, Daniel Jack Lyons, Jake Elwes, Lilah Benetti and FAFSWAG, who will explore queer and trans narratives as well as themes of identity, spirituality, heritage and culture.

Later in the afternoon, Derik Lynch and Matthew Thorne will show their film Marungka Tjalatjunu (Dipped In Black), a journey of self-discovery and healing from Adelaide to Anangu Community (Aputula), before an audience Q&A.

Rounding off the evening will be music and merriment curated by an all-Indigenous lineup of artists and DJs headlined by Djanaba and featuring  Soju Gang and naycab.

With a pop-up bar and glamorous views of the Maribyrnong River and city skyline, Queer Our West will be a day of joy and creative exploration at Footscray Community Arts.

What’s more, the event is the first of the organisation’s impressive programme. It’ll also be hosting the Tilde Film Festival from May 3 to 5, a live performance by The Suppostabys from August 14 to 17 and a 50th-anniversary celebration later in the year, among others.
