Q&A: The Leafs

So then, what’s the band name and what do you ‘do’ in the band?

The Leafs. I sing and play a guitar with all the strings tuned to the same note.

Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, what do you reckon people will say you sound like?

One magazine said our first single sounded like Springsteen’s Born To Run being covered by half of Pixies. That’s pretty cool. We’ve also been compared to The Clean and Guided By Voices.

What do you love about making music?

Is this a trick question? Making music.

What do you hate about the music industry?

Haters.

Proudest moment?

We got an email from a friend of Bob Pollard (lead singer of Guided By Voices and a total hero of ours), who said Bob had been talking up our first EP over beers in Dayton, Ohio. In our world this is like someone saying “Yeah, I was smoking weed with Bob Dylan in Greenwich Village/sniffing some glue with Joey Ramone in CBGBs, he said you guys were cool.” We were very happy.

Least proud?

The time someone compared us to the Doug Anthony Allstars.

What can a punter expect from your live show?

We cram about 20 songs into 30 minutes. We whoop and holler and dance around. We lurch between beauty and electricity, poetry and stupidity.

What’ve you got to sell CD-wise?

Two EPs – Space Elevator, which came out in July; and Come, Take My Hand, which we’re launching this week.

When’s the gig and with who?

Our EP launch is this Friday December 2 at the Grace Darling on Smith St. We’re playing with Super Melody, Clue To Kalo and Isle Adore. 9pm, $8. Bargain.

Anything else to add?

Yeah, our drummer Gus Kemp makes videos. He’s pretty good, too! He’s made them for all manner of other bands, but he’s just started doing them for us as well. We have a new one just out this week on Vimeo, called The Error Of Your Ways. Check it out if you like that kind of thing.
