Q&A: Ruby Boots

Define your genre in five words or less:

Indie-folk and alt-country

Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, what do you reckon people will say you sound like?

Alt country/folk rock.

When’s the gig and with who?

Queenscliff Music Festival this weekend, there are a lot of great artists on there, but my top picks are Missy Higgins, You Am I,  Mia Dyson and Jordie Lane. We also play a headline show at The Workers Club on Wednesday November 28.

When are you playing live/releasing your album/EP/single/etc?

We are touring and have just released our new single Kellie Anne. We are recording our debut full length album in May next year, that can’t come soon enough for us!

What part of making music excites you the most?

The songwriting, it’s the most cathartic time in life for me

Tell us about the last song you wrote.

Long Time Coming. It’s part blues part soul – it’s about something that’s been coming to an end for a while, and finally having the clarity to end it with a bit of ce la vie thrown in for good measure.

What’s your favourite song, and why?

Mercedes Benz. It’s short, sweet, has a strong message and has everything in a song that I want from it and it’s a cappella, sung by one of the greatest voices ever to have graced this earth.

When, and why did you start writing music?

When I was 22, I was working on pearl boats as a deckhand and I started playing guitar to avoid losing my sanity whilst out at sea for weeks at a time, the songs just came after that and I’ve never looked back. I’m not so sure it’s helped me kept my sanity though.

If your music was a chocolate bar, which one would it be, and why?

Flake, cause it’s pretty simple, not a lot to it, but it tastes fucking awesome.

Anything else to add?

I’m really excited to be playing with one of my favourite Melbourne artists, Jordie Lane, at the Northcote in a couple of weeks and sitting at Kent Street in Fitzroy, my favourite place to hang out in Melbourne! I love, love, love Melbourne!
