Q&A: Rocket To Memphis

rockettomemphis.jpeg

Define your genre in five words or less:

Hip-shakin’ voodoo rock’n’roll!

So, someone is walking past as you guys are playing, they then go get a beer and tell their friend about you… what do they say?

“I’ve been dying for a beer for the last hour but I haven’t been able to take my eyes off the stage!”

How long have you been gigging and writing?

Rocket To Memphis have been leaving audiences dishevelled since 2006, but our post punk roots stretch back into distant memory with Toys Went Beserk (Google it Grandad!).

What has been your favourite gig you’ve played to date?

Headlining ‘Voodoo Erotica GoGo Rock n Roll’ in Tokyo last year.

Which band would you most like to have a battle/showdown with?

We were lucky enough to play with The Cramps back in our Toys Went Berserk days. Heavy Trash would probably be our pick now.

What inspires or has influenced your music the most?

Bad girls, wild retro sounds and style, and the notes no-one else wants to use.

What do you think a band has to do these days to succeed?

Sell your soul to the Devil- just as it’s always been.

Do you have any record releases to date? What? Where can I get them?

We have three albums and a 7″ vinyl single: Swampwater Shuffle (2007), Hip Shakin’ Voodoo (2009) and Jungle Juice (2011) which was recorded in New York with Matt Verta-Ray (Heavy Trash) at the controls. All are available in good record shops, through online outlets or direct from us (rockettomemphis.com).

We’re also featured on the new Cramps tribute compilation CRAMPED! (Raucous Records).

Why should everyone come and see your band?

If you’re into hip-grinding garage & swingin’ swampabilly… If you like shakin’ it to tales of bad girls, rampaging zombies and love-struck werewolves… You’re gonna dig Rocket To Memphis!

When are you playing live/releasing your album?

We’ll be back in Melbourne on the first weekend of October to unveil a 7″ vinyl single I’m Bad from the current album Jungle Juice (both on Off The Hip Records). Grab your copy at one of the shows, before it hits the shops, and check out the video on Youtube! We’re playing Friday October 7 at The Retreat Hotel in Brunswick with Midnight Woolf and Saturday October 8 at the killer new Fitzroy venue the LuWOW!
