Q&A: Meniscus

What’s your name then? Oh. And the name of your event?

We’re Meniscus (Cameron, Daniel, Alison, Marty) from Sydney and we’re launching our debut album ‘War of Currents’ at The Curtin Bandroom as part of the Bird’s Robe Records showcase.

And what do you do?

We write and perform post-rock / experimental music and incorporate visuals into our live performances. In 2007 we released an EP called Absence of I and although it took a while, this year we released our debut album, War Of Currents.

When did you start doing that?

Meniscus has been writing and performing since 2005. There was a hiatus for a few years when we lost and found a drummer. In late 2009 Marty joined the band and we’ve been doing our thing together ever since.

Why did you start doing that?

The band started like most bands with a few friends jamming and experimenting, exploring new sounds and just enjoying being lost in music. Without lyrics to our music we add the visual element to provide simple themes and concepts to compliment the music without having a strict narrative.

Do you think you’re good at doing that?

We hope so.

If you weren’t doing that, what would you be doing?

I imagine we’d be working our regular nine to five jobs like usual, playing more video games than we already do and dreaming about being in a band.

What makes you happiest about what you’re doing?

Daniel probably summed that up best at our album launch in Sydney, “When it’s the middle of July and it’s pissing down rain, and you can still fill a room with 4 instrumental bands, I’d say it’s worth it”.

And what makes you unhappiest about what you’re doing?

Not too much makes us unhappy or we wouldn’t be doing it.

What’s you proudest moment of doing what you do?

Releasing War Of Currents would have to be up there. We’re really pleased with the recording and it’s the first release since Cameron (drummer) joined the band.

When are you doing your thing next?

Our album launch at The Curtin Bandroom, Friday December 23 with sleepmakeswaves, Pirate and Toehider. After that, we’re planning a European tour for 2012!
