Punking & W_acking were born on the dancefloor as an act of Queer affirmation. Join these workshops and the community showcase event!
Join us for four hands-on workshops with a community celebratory showcase exploring punking and w_acking,.a dance born from Black and Latinx communities in Los Angeles.
This series frames choreography from 8 teachers through a neurodiverse lens, transforming dance into a conceptual and social playground, dissolving boundaries between mind, body and community.
Punking is a Queer-born club dance defined by pose, attitude and musical domination. W_acking is the action – it’s the way you move with intention, power and presence.
In a world with constant mundane rhythms, Burn City W_ack wants you to punk the beat of life with imagination, for social change and to give yourself radical joy.
Who it’s for
Open to students 16 and over from our suburban dance studios, international students, and anyone curious about this dance and hungry to build their skills. These classes are great for classically trained dancers wanting to expand their skills and for street dancers seeking a new expression through music.
Workshops are capped at a limited number, ensuring teachers can provide specific feedback and tools in an intimate setting. This dance is about expressing yourself.
Community Showcase
Come together for the community showcase jam on Saturday, 27th June. Each contestant has 90 seconds to perform their own solo. The Top 4 battle it out in a roulette wheel of ‘concept rounds’, having to make themed performances right there on the spot. It is strongly recommended to attend one class if entering the showcase.
For the showcase, all are welcome to celebrate punking and w_acking. W_acking is more than just dancing; it’s a way to punk the beat together and live authentically together from the inside out.
