Victoria's public transport network will be completely free every weekend this summer, starting when the Metro Tunnel opens in Melbourne early December.

The Victorian government has announced free public transport travel on every tram, bus, Melbourne train and regional train from the first Saturday service in early December until 1 February. No myki required, no tapping on, no charges; just jump on and ride.

Premier Jacinta Allan and Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams announced the free transport initiative at State Library Station, calling it a thank you to Victorians for their patience during the Metro Tunnel construction. The move coincides with the Metro Tunnel’s Summer Start, which brings 240 new weekly services from early December before the Big Switch on 1 February introduces 1,000 new services and a complete timetable overhaul.

Melbourne public transport passengers won’t need to tap on or off during free travel weekends. If you accidentally tap your myki, you won’t be charged. Some regional services will still require a free reservation, following existing booking requirements.

The Summer Start phase begins when the Metro Tunnel opens in early December, adding 240 new weekly services across the network. This leads into the Big Switch on 1 February, when the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines will run through the Metro Tunnel, delivering 1,000 additional weekly services.

The free public transport for Melbourne and Victorian weekend travel initiative represents the largest free transport offer in state history, designed to encourage people to explore the new Metro Tunnel stations and celebrate the completion of the major infrastructure project.
