Public Figures follow their breakout EP with a heavier new single and a run of shows topped by a hometown headliner at the Tote.
Public Figures have kicked down the door with Push My Buttons, their most abrasive single yet, plus a headline run.
Push My Buttons is the band’s first fresh material since Figure It Out! landed in February. Written in May and tracked the following month at Sundowner Studios in Melbourne, the cut was produced by Public Figures drummer Gigi Argiro. Mixing came courtesy of Los Angeles engineer Samur Khouja, whose credits take in Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Strokes and Dry Cleaning, while Simon Berckelman (Courtney Barnett, Cate Le Bon) handled the master.

The track shoves the four-piece into rougher terrain, stacking industrial guitars, duelling vocals and warped drum-machine textures over blown-out snares. It swaps the scrappy charge of their earlier work for something meaner and more controlled, without ditching the DIY streak that got them here.
Lyrically, it channels the frustration of watching men cross the same boundaries on repeat, then tips that pent-up exasperation into release. The accompanying clip matches the mood, directed and edited by Richard Clifford from a concept he shaped with vocalist Evie Vlah: all snarl, tension and simmering payoff.
It caps a fierce stretch. The outfit of Evie Vlah, Gigi Argiro, Lakota Vella and Mary-Lou Hylands have torn through a set at Golden Plains, sold out a national tour and drawn a devoted new following. This latest run rolls through Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales, with Belair Lip Bombs along for several dates and The Saints joining the February wind-up at the Croxton.
The 13 November bill at the Tote, though, is the one flying their own name.
