PSI PHI

An afternoon of progressive, psychedelic and otherworldly sounds with PSI PHI, Tambourine Jesus & Mad Vantage at Cross St Music Hall.

PSI PHI, Tambourine Jesus and Mad Vantage bring you an afternoon of prog,
psychadelic, alternative and nu-jazz tinged rock on Sunday April 7 at Cross St Band Hall, Brunswick East. It will be a feast for the ears for all ages – families welcome, but remember ear protection for littlies because it might get a little heavy!

Here’s a little about your hosts:

PSI PHI (“sci-fi”), features Sam Cope (Blue King Brown, Buttered Loaf, The Badloves) on Hammond/keyboards/vocals, Ryan Monro (The Cat Empire, The Meltdown) on bass, Kumar Shome (The Punkawallahs, Mad Vantage, Ajax Kwai) on guitar and Will Hull-Brown (The Cat Empire) on drums. They blend a selection of covers with a growing repertoire of originals, drawing inspiration from the gods and monsters of 70s-era prog and classic rock as well as more modern incarnations, with an appropriate level of musical virtuosity and intensity. Expect anything from Floyd to Focus; Yes to Sabbath; Deep Purple to Justice and everything in-between, and some truly monstrous, organ-driven grooves.

TAMBOURINE JESUS are an emerging Australian rock band drawing on post-punk, progressive and alternative influences. The members of the trio include James Gilligan (bass/vocals), Neil Wilkinson (guitar/vocals) & Liam Gough (drums/vocals). This group of artists hail from diverse and plethoric stylistic backgrounds. Tambourine Jesus unites them in celebration of their artistic collision and unique collaborative songwriting. Their music features an enticing vulnerability and lyrical sincerity, backed by unpredictable sonic surprises and flattering forms.

The members have written, recorded and toured extensively with acts including; The Teskey Brothers, Beth Orton, Angus & Julia Stone, Missy Higgins, Paul Kelly, Spencer P Jones, Killing Heidi, Redcoats, Fluff, Emma Donovan, Freya Josephine Hollick, Lightly Toasted & Peter Combe among others.

MAD VANTAGE – SOLUNE’s new instrumental project, Mad Vantage, presents new compositions exploring the sounds of prog-metal fused with nu-jazz: complex rhythmic designs, metric illusions and lush harmonic soundscapes.

She has carefully curated a sound which exemplifies the contemporary quartet with flexible melodic and rhythmic roles within the ensemble and the incorporation of synthesizers, distortion and electronic drum/ambient sounds. Described as intricate and unapologetic, she has been influenced by Animals as Leaders, Hiromi, Tigran Hamasyan and Avishai Cohen Trio to create a sound which is decidedly her own. Mad Vantage has already supported heavyweights Grievous Bodily Calm and Your Girl Pho, and will be releasing a debut album in the coming months – not to be missed!

Mad Vantage is a killer band made up of: SOLUNE (Selene Messinis) – keyboards/synthesizers; Kumar Shome – guitar/effects; Matt Hayes – electric bass; Tim Cox – drums/electronics
