Princes Highway East and West are among key routes getting major upgrades under Victoria's Better Roads Blitz.
The Victorian government has launched its largest single-year investment in road maintenance, with a $976 million program targeting the state’s busiest travel and freight corridors. Princes Highway East and Princes Highway West have been identified as priority routes in the massive infrastructure push that will run through to mid-2026.
Better Roads Blitz represents a comprehensive approach to tackling Victoria’s road network challenges, with 70 per cent of funding directed towards regional roads. Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne launched the program in Kyneton, where crews have already begun addressing potholes and upgrading road surfaces across the state.

Major arterials including the Western Highway, Hume Highway and Calder Highway will receive attention alongside both sections of Princes Highway. Metropolitan Melbourne hasn’t been forgotten either, with the Mornington Peninsula Freeway, Leakes Road, Normanby Road, Warburton Highway and Boronia Road all scheduled for improvements.
Road selection wasn’t arbitrary; expert assessments and community feedback guided the prioritisation process, ensuring upgrades target areas where they’re most needed.
Beyond the headline road repairs, crews will tackle thousands of smaller projects across the network. Roadside maintenance including mowing, slashing and spraying will cover tens of thousands of kilometres. Bridge inspections and repairs will address thousands of structures, while hundreds of traffic light sets and electronic signs will receive attention. Graffiti removal and general maintenance work round out the program.
