Pow Wow is a unique Indigenous musical culture and Joe Rainey - a member of the Red Lake Ojibwe Indigenous peoples of Minnesota - is its most renowned proponent.
Rainey has received global acclaim for his unique compositions, signing to 37d03d – the record label founded by Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and The National’s Aaron and Bryce Dessner.
You may have heard him feature on tracks from the likes of Chance The Rapper and Bon Iver, but mixing Pow Wow with a range of electronic influences, his own show will be a performance like no other, unlike anything you’ve heard before.

He’ll be bringing his debut album Niineta (an Ojibwe word meaning “just me”) to The Substation on September 23, where he’ll be joined by Amby Downs (the musical pseudonym of interdisciplinary artist Tahlia Palmer). Palmer creates place-based sonic works that aim to engage with trauma and decolonise mind, spirit and body. This is going to be a special night of First Nations sound.
To try to give context to just how powerfully emotive Rainey’s work is, take it from Vernon himself, who told Pitchfork last year: “It’s one of the hardest times I’ve ever wept from pure beauty and expression. He is one of my favourite singers on the planet.”
