Port Phillip Council is reaching out to young music fans with its new Youth Soundcheck survey, aiming to boost attendance at live music events and venues among younger audiences.
The live music scene is fickle and ever-changing. The council of Port Phillip understands that what fans wanted to see 10 years ago is wildly different from what they want to see.
In order to welcome younger live music fans into the fold, they’re running a survey asking local residents ages 15 to 25 what they’re looking for when it comes to live music.

To encourage people to participate in the survey, they’re giving away prizes including double passes to its upcoming events, including the M.I.C.S on Youth Music Forum at JMC Academy, the Over 18s Showcase at the Prince Bandroom and two huge all-ages gigs at Espy Basement.
The survey aims to gather insights on how young people discover and enjoy music and their preferences for live gigs. It takes less than 10 minutes to complete and will influence future live music offerings in Port Phillip.
The data from this survey will build on Music Victoria’s 2023 findings, which revealed that 85 per cent of 16 to 18-year-olds face barriers to attending concerts and festivals, such as lack of motivation and high costs.
While primarily targeting young Port Phillip residents, the Council welcomes input from young music fans who visit the area or have ideas on how to attract them.
“We know from the Music Victoria survey, and the tremendous turnout at our St Kilda Festival each year, that
young Victorians definitely have an appetite for live music,” says Mayor Heather Cunsolo.
“Our survey is about filling in the gaps to motivate more young music lovers to support the tremendous talent and live music venues on offer in our City.”
The survey, Youth Soundcheck – Experiences of Live Music in Our City, is open now and will close on 16 September 2024.
Additionally, the Council will support emerging musicians and industry professionals through its sponsorship of the M.I.C.S on Youth Music Forum, partnering with youth consultants Y Lab, and will conduct a survey at the City of Port Phillip’s Youth Summit at St Kilda Town Hall on 1 August.
