Clearly, things happen over the Tasman slightly differently. But I digress – it is the Phinesse’ take on a fusion of pop and RnB that is making waves in a seemingly more crowded Australian market. But that doesn’t trouble him. “I’ve been doing performances since school and after that, wanted to pursue a career in music. It was a friend’s advice but I was hooked; my cousin and I started off doing house parties and birthday parties and enjoyed pop and funk, hip hop; these were the things that appealed to us then. And the beats and lyrics, the whole vibe was great.”
Last time we spoke, David was hopeful that his first artist album would take his fans into a specific direction. “It was a bit of a different style,” chimes David. “It was sort of in the funk direction, but it’s different to a lot of the urban music in Australia; all of the music on that album was live instruments and I decided to go for that sound; I did the beats and loops thing with the mix tapes so now it was time to switch it up.”
Indeed, now the lad is working hard on an evolutionary phase in his career. “I think it’s a process of reinventing myself a bit; I’ve got a really different look and sound and direction musically. It’s about working with different people; traditionally I’ve been doing the RnB and hip hop thing and now I’m doing things that are a little more house and electro style – and that’s how it’s really changing. I like all sorts of music and that gives me a chance to do things differently.”
“I guess in a way you can say that hip-hop and RnB has been done before and I like all sorts of music and that’s why it’s a different sound I’m doing. I’ve also worked with a few artists from the States in the last year or two and little things like that; the guys on the West Coast are on the same page and with the changed direction and style of music, I’m really enjoying it. For me, it’s always about bringing the hype. Whether it’s on tour or supporting international acts or in the studio – I’m about doing something fun; I just want to entertain.”
