Kirin J Callinan + Body Type + Press Club
One of Melbourne Music Week’s more diverse slate of acts is taking over The Carpark tonight. Pop vanguard Kirin J Callinan returned this year with his stellar 2017 LP, Bravado, and has been touring the globe ever since. The album was 0.5 shy of a perfect 10 in our books exploring everything from ’80s new wave to ’90s EDM. Sydney’s Body Type will bring their garage pop eloquence to the stage with emerging Melbourne rockers Press Club rounding out the bill. By golly, this will be a sight to see.
Melbourne Music Week’s avenue of enlightenment, conversation and rumination gets underway today. Running over two days, Face The Music will bring together some of the most intellectual people in music, crossing hairs on the stage. Featuring Ariel Pink, who recently brought splendour to the Melbourne Recital Centre, former Ramone’s drummer Marky Ramone, rapping wunderkind Mallrat, legendary promoter Silke Westera and more, this is a music buff’s dream.
In a special event, PBS 106.7FM will be broadcasting live not from their Easey Street den but from North Melbourne’s boisterous dive, The Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar. From nought to a hundred in under ten seconds, PBS’ frenetic program Fang It! will be aired from 5pm with a riotous live-to-air performance from Melbourne punk lords Clowns in store. It’s all part of Live Music Safari, which is celebrating 40 years of punk for MMW 2017.
Ali Barter + Alice Skye + Hey Mammoth
This fine and sunny Thursday will also be featuring a free performance from femme rock singer-songwriter Ali Barter at Federation Square. Her 2017 album, A Suitable Girl, has been met with widespread acclaim with her candid single, ‘Girlie Bits’, at the top. Barter will be joined by rising songstress Alice Skye and talented busker Hey Mammoth. The soundscapes of these fantastic artists will be met with a visual backdrop made for the Her Sound, Her Story project, a celebration of the diverse women in the Australian music industry.
HABITS + Various Asses + Gussy + more at Boney
Boney is set to be exhilarated by progressive electronics as sad goth party legends HABITS headline a fantastic bill of adventurous producers. It’s a two-level takeover with trap house outfit Various Asses also set to perform. Other artists include Gussy, Kandere, HEXDEBT, trixie darko, DJ Kiti and Dolly all performing as part of MMW’s Live Music Safari.
