Given the climate of the arts industry, The Annual Arts Grants program is a swift stroke at bringing back some of the talent that Melbourne has. By granting a sum of money to an artist for a said project, they have the opportunity not only to create with freedom and without financial stress, but also to showcase to many potential admirers and buyers.
What’s especially special about this grant program is the focus First Nations art. Of the three categories where grants can be implemented, one is the Aboriginal Arts Project – a highlight from the 2023 program is by the Na Djinang Circus, a contemporary performative take on the complexities of acknowledging country. The performance – Of The Land On Which We Meet – isn’t a typical exploration of connection to country, but a physical discovery of it.
The program is also featuring a live art show from Mama Alto and Maude Davey, which focuses on the facets of current transgender life – exploring experiences, identity and a general celebration of queerness in a modern trans sense.
“We are interested in amplifying the power, the beauty, the magic and the joy of the trans experience. We won’t ignore the bad – but we won’t surrender to it either!” is what Mama Alto said to LOTL about the show.
